Miami Home Base: Why I Chose the Sunshine City for Recharging Between Travels

Written by David Roma | Oct 26, 2024 1:47:13 PM

After years of digital nomad travel and calling NYC my home base, I found myself craving a new kind of place to come back to between adventures. Spending time in sunny spots like Brazil and California made me realize that if I was going to settle anywhere, it needed to be somewhere with beaches, warm weather, and that vibrant city vibe.

Miami checked all the boxes, making it the perfect choice to recharge and keep the sun in my life all year long.

Choosing a home base can be a challenge for digital nomads who can technically live anywhere in the world. Here are the main factors that helped me decide to make Miami my new home base:

☀️ Weather: Sunshine Year-Round

Weather was a top priority. I wanted a place that felt like summer all year—no more NYC winters! Miami’s tropical climate means warmth and sunshine almost every day, which keeps me energized and ready for whatever’s next.

🌊 Ocean & City Life

A major factor was proximity to both the ocean and a lively city. Miami gives me direct access to the beach 🏖️ and all the energy of a big city, which narrowed my options significantly. There aren’t many U.S. cities that offer this combo.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Place for Friends and Family to Visit

Since Miami is a top destination for travel, I knew family and friends would be more likely to come visit. It’s a bonus to have a home base that doubles as a place for the people I care about to enjoy as well.

📶 Fast Wi-Fi

Reliable, fast internet is a must. Miami’s solid tech infrastructure and widespread connectivity mean I can count on staying productive and connected.

👩‍💻 Youthful, Diverse Demographic

As a place that draws people from all over, Miami has a youthful and diverse crowd. The energy is inspiring, with people from all backgrounds and industries coming together, which feels motivating and keeps things interesting.

🛡️ Safety

Safety was a big consideration, especially since I’ll be spending a lot of time here between travels. Miami is a city where I feel secure, and the neighborhoods I’m drawn to, like Brickell and Wynwood, are safe and welcoming.

💸 Favorable Tax Laws

Miami’s favorable tax climate (hello, Florida!) also played a role. With no state income tax, it’s a financially smart choice for a base in the U.S., especially as a self-employed digital nomad.

⏰ Eastern Standard Time Zone

After living in New York, staying on Eastern Standard Time was a plus. It helps keep a rhythm with my East Coast clients and collaborators without having to adjust across time zones.

✈️ Major International Airport

Miami’s international airport was another selling point. With one of the largest airports in the U.S., I can easily jet in and out for both domestic and international travels, making it ideal for a digital nomad lifestyle.

💼 Vibrant Entrepreneur & Tech Scene

Miami’s entrepreneurial scene has exploded in recent years. With tech, marketing, and start-up communities growing here, it’s easy to meet other like-minded people, attend events, and stay connected to a network that feels both creative and professional.

Conclusion

Choosing Miami as my new home base was all about finding the right balance: sunshine, city life, and everything a digital nomad could need to feel connected and inspired. If you’re thinking about relocating or picking a home base, consider what energizes you, what you want in your daily life, and what will make your travels even better when you come back. For me, Miami was the perfect fit, and I’m excited to keep exploring all it has to offer!
