Third Stop on Remote Year: One Month in Medellín, Colombia

main-Oct-24-2024-05-35-34-8411-PM

After an unforgettable month in Peru, our Remote Year journey took us to Medellín, Colombia 🇨🇴. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its perfect year-round climate, Medellín is a stunning city nestled in a lush valley surrounded by mountains.

The blend of vibrant greenery, urban architecture, and towering mountains gives Medellín a unique beauty that’s hard to match. For this month, we stayed in El Poblado, a lively neighborhood full of cafes, restaurants, and nightlife, and worked from the inspiring Selina coworking space.

Where I Stayed: El Poblado & Selina Coworking

El Poblado is Medellín’s go-to neighborhood for digital nomads, known for its safety, vibrant nightlife, and excellent dining options. Staying here meant we were close to everything and could easily explore the city. Our coworking space, Selina, had the perfect setup—comfortable work areas, strong Wi-Fi, and a fantastic community of digital nomads from all over the world.

What I Did

Rooftop Bars and Restaurants with Incredible Views

Medellín is a city built in a valley, so nearly every rooftop offers stunning views of the mountains and cityscape. We spent many evenings enjoying the scenery from various rooftop bars and restaurants, each one offering a unique perspective of Medellín. These spots became our go-to places for unwinding after a long day, catching the sunset, and taking in the city’s beauty.

Exploring Comuna 13

One of the highlights of Medellín was visiting Comuna 13, a neighborhood that has transformed from being one of the most dangerous areas to a symbol of resilience and creativity. Comuna 13 is filled with incredible street art, music, and culture, and it was inspiring to see how art has revitalized the community. Exploring the vibrant murals, hearing stories of local artists, and learning about the area’s history made it an unforgettable experience.

All-Day Bike Tour Through the City

We also took a full-day bike tour to explore Medellín up close. The tour took us through various neighborhoods and downtown, allowing us to see everything from bustling markets to quiet parks. Biking through the city’s unique streets was a great way to experience Medellín’s vibrant energy, with its mix of traditional Colombian culture and modern city life.

Salsa Dancing: Embracing Colombian Culture

Learning salsa was an essential part of my Medellín experience. Salsa is woven into Colombian culture, and we attended multiple salsa events throughout the city to fully embrace it. From local clubs to outdoor dance floors, every night was an opportunity to learn new moves and connect with locals. I took a few lessons and found myself hooked—it was an incredible way to feel the rhythm and spirit of Colombia.

Staycation at the Click Clack Hotel

Toward the end of the month, I treated myself to a staycation at the upscale Click Clack Hotel. After weeks of constant travel and socializing, I needed a little time to recharge. The Click Clack is known for its luxurious ambiance, and my room provided the perfect space to unwind. The hotel’s rooftop bar, NaeFugo, was another highlight, with stylish decor and some of the best views in Medellín. It was a chance to enjoy some luxury, catch up on rest, and prepare for the next leg of our journey.

Conclusion

Medellín was a perfect blend of work, cultural immersion, and breathtaking scenery. From the social vibe of El Poblado and salsa dancing to the powerful experience of exploring Comuna 13, every day offered something new. Medellín’s charm, resilience, and incredible energy left a lasting impact, making it one of the highlights of my Remote Year journey.
