Pura Vida in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica: ATVs, Surfing, and New Skills

Written by David Roma | Oct 26, 2024 1:48:53 PM

After a few months recharging in New York, the travel bug hit again, but I wasn’t sure where to go next. I’d never been to Costa Rica, and Outsite had a few stunning locations there, so I decided to check it out for a month.

Santa Teresa, a small beach town with an energetic digital nomad scene, was the perfect blend of laid-back beach vibes and adventure.

Getting There: An Adventure from the Start

My journey to Santa Teresa kicked off with a small commuter plane from San José to a nearby airstrip. Flying over Costa Rica’s lush jungle landscape in a tiny plane was an adventure in itself, setting the tone for an incredible month.

Where I Stayed: Outsite Santa Teresa

I stayed at Outsite’s Santa Teresa location, a cozy house tucked into the jungle and just a short walk from the beach. Outsite Santa Teresa had everything I needed—a workspace, reliable Wi-Fi, and a relaxed, beachy vibe that made it easy to both work and unwind.

The house had a great layout for socializing, and with a kitchen, hammocks, and plenty of outdoor space, it felt like a real Costa Rican retreat. The digital nomad community there quickly became like family, making it one of my favorite Outsite experiences.

What I Did

Joining the Digital Nomad Community at Outsite Santa Teresa

The Outsite Santa Teresa house had an awesome community of digital nomads who quickly became like friends. Whether we were exploring new places, hanging out by the beach, or sharing work tips, it was great to be surrounded by like-minded travelers. Outsite’s setup made it easy to balance work with adventure, and the crew there made every activity more fun.

Riding ATVs to Montezuma Waterfall

One of our group adventures was riding ATVs through the jungle to the Montezuma waterfall. The trail was bumpy, and the views were incredible, leading us to a beautiful waterfall where we could swim and cool off. There’s nothing like an ATV ride through Costa Rican scenery to make you feel fully immersed in the wild.

Exploring the Beaches & Learning to Surf

Santa Teresa’s beaches 🏖️ are known for their waves, making it an ideal spot to learn how to surf. Surfing was definitely a challenge, but I took a few lessons and got hooked! There’s nothing like the feeling of catching a wave, and it was a great way to unwind and push myself after a day of work.

Island Boat Trip & Whale Spotting

One of the highlights was a boat trip to a remote island where we snorkeled and swam. At one point, we were only about 20 feet away from a pod of whales 🐋, a surreal and awe-inspiring moment that I’ll never forget. Being that close to whales in the wild was a powerful reminder of Costa Rica’s natural beauty.

What I Was Working On

During my time in Costa Rica, I focused on leveling up my business and my skillset. Here’s a look at what I worked on:

  • Value-Based Pricing: I was reading the book “Value-Based Pricing” and working with a business coach to integrate these strategies into my consulting services. Shifting to value-based pricing for my HubSpot consulting services helped me create more meaningful partnerships with clients and focus on results-driven outcomes.

  • Building Reddit’s New Moderator Hub: I was also working on a new project for Reddit, building their Reddit for Community hub on HubSpot CMS, a resource specifically for moderators. This project allowed me to develop new skills on the HubSpot CMS platform while supporting an important community-focused initiative.

  • Expanding the Generator Theme: I continued adding features to my HubSpot generator theme, enhancing modules and creating new functionalities to make the theme even more user-friendly and versatile for clients.

Conclusion

Even though I visited during Costa Rica’s low season, and it did rain quite a bit, the weather didn’t stop me from having an incredible experience. The rain actually created a good balance—days full of adventure, with quiet rainy hours for productivity and getting work done. Santa Teresa offered the perfect mix of work, community, and adventure, and it’s a place I’d definitely return to.
