After spending time in Costa Rica and heading back to New York for a few months, I was craving a longer stay abroad without the hassle of constant travel planning.
So, I joined Remote Year for a four-month journey through South America. I’d never been to South America before (Costa Rica is actually in Central America), so this was a whole new adventure.
The best part? Remote Year takes care of all the logistics—flights, lodging, coworking spaces, and group activities. All I had to do was arrive in Buenos Aires, the first stop, and settle in for a month.
Our group of about 50 digital nomads lived and worked in the heart of Buenos Aires. Remote Year set us up with fantastic accommodations and a well-equipped coworking space, so it was easy to stay productive and connected. Buenos Aires’ mix of historic architecture and buzzing city life made every day feel exciting, and having everything organized for us was a huge relief.
You can’t visit Buenos Aires without trying Argentine steak, and Don Julio is one of the most famous spots to experience it. Our group made a reservation (no small feat with 50 people) and enjoyed an incredible steak dinner. Argentina is known for its high-quality beef, and Don Julio lived up to the hype—it was easily one of the best meals of my life.
When I arrived in South America, I knew I wanted to make the most of my time here by learning Spanish. I hired a tutor and committed to lessons three times a week, which made a huge difference in my ability to connect with locals and navigate the city.
To practice, I also joined Mundo Lingo, a language exchange event where locals and foreigners meet up at a bar to learn each other’s languages. The night usually starts with language exchanges but quickly turns into a massive party that spills out onto the streets. It was the perfect blend of learning and fun, and I continued my Spanish lessons and language exchanges throughout my four months in South America.
Buenos Aires is filled with beautiful architecture, much of it influenced by European design. I spent time walking through neighborhoods, admiring grand buildings, and taking in the rich Argentine culture. Buenos Aires has a charm that’s both sophisticated and lively, making every walk feel like a discovery.
The Palermo neighborhood is known for its trendy bars, restaurants, and nightlife. I explored its vibrant spots with other Remote Year travelers, discovering amazing food, live music, and some unforgettable parties. Palermo’s energy is contagious, and it quickly became my favorite place to hang out in Buenos Aires.
Buenos Aires was an unforgettable introduction to South America and a perfect start to my Remote Year journey. From the incredible food to the lively culture and language learning experiences, Buenos Aires had the perfect mix of adventure, socializing, and personal growth. As I continued my journey through South America, I kept up my Spanish lessons, explored new cities, and looked forward to what each new destination would bring.
